The Mental Health Index, a novel initiative by the KGL Foundation sought to highlight and solve the problem of unaddressed mental health issues and societal stigmatisation prevalent in Ghana and the West Africa Region.
The Challenge
Mental health in Ghana continues to be significantly impacted by widespread stigma and deeply ingrained cultural misconceptions. Many communities persist in attributing mental health issues to shame or supernatural causes, resulting in discrimination, social exclusion, and a reluctance to seek professional treatment. This pervasive stigma presents a substantial barrier to early diagnosis and intervention, thereby impeding access to appropriate support and care. Consequently, it contributes to a substantial treatment gap, underscoring the urgent need for increased awareness, education, and destigmatization efforts within the country.
The Strategy
The first step was to understand the problem at hand. Our research & insight team interviewed over One hundred and twenty volunteers across three main cities; Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast. This highlighted stigma and discrimination as the core problem at hand. Central to our strategy was therefore the need to digitalize access to mental healthcare by making resources readily available and accessible across diverse communities. We assembled a multidisciplinary team of experts spanning medical, social, and psychological fields, united by a single goal: to develop a comprehensive database of diverse stories, experiences, and resources, each meticulously curated and evaluated for authenticity and relevance.
The Execution
To facilitate accessible and engaging mental health support, we designed an interactive web platform serving as a centralized knowledge hub. The platform includes a dynamic messaging center, enabling seamless communication between individuals seeking help and those equipped to provide support. Our collaboration with mental health professionals, technological innovators, and support networks culminated in the creation of this transformative platform, known as the Mental Health Index—an innovative tool aimed at destigmatizing mental health, expanding access to care, and fostering community-driven support.
The Outcome
Within just six months of its launch, the Mental Health Index (MHI) website attracted over one million visitors, marking a significant shift in the perception and accessibility of mental health care. Our fundraising campaign successfully raised over two million Ghanaian cedis, enabling the continued development and expansion of the MHI initiative. Additionally, outreach programs were conducted across secondary schools nationwide to promote awareness and destigmatize mental health issues. The results of these efforts have been highly encouraging, fostering greater engagement and understanding within communities across the country.
